How Split Circle handles your expense data. Short version: we collect the minimum needed for the app to work, and nothing more.

Who we are

Split Circle is developed and published by 73lines. This policy describes what the Split Circle mobile and web apps collect, how we use it, and your rights.

What Split Circle collects

Expense data you enter (amounts, descriptions, participants, dates, optional receipt photos, optional notes) — stored locally on your device by default.

Group membership info — the people you split with, identified by a display name they choose. Email or phone is not required.

If you opt into cloud sync or create an account: your email address (to authenticate), and an encrypted copy of your expense data (to sync across devices).

Basic crash and diagnostic signals so we can fix bugs — these contain no expense content.

What we do NOT collect

We don't show ads, so we don't have ad IDs, advertising profiles, or audience segments.

We don't sell data. We don't share expense data with third parties for marketing.

We don't require contacts access. We don't require location. We don't require camera access unless you explicitly attach a receipt photo.

How we use your data

To run the app: calculate splits, show balances, sync across your devices if enabled.

To provide support: if you email us, we see your message and may look at your account state to help (only with your permission).

To improve the app: aggregated, de-identified usage signals (feature X was used N times).

AI features and data processing

Split Circle uses AI to make the app easier to use. Here's exactly what each feature does with your data.

Receipt scanning (OCR): runs on-device using an on-device vision model. The photo and extracted text stay on your phone unless you choose to attach the photo to the expense (in which case it syncs with the rest of your data if cloud sync is enabled).

Natural-language entry: parses the sentence you typed into structured expense fields. Short sentences (under 200 characters) are parsed on-device. Longer or ambiguous inputs may be sent to a third-party language model provider (for example, an LLM API). When we send text to a provider, we strip display names, contact info, and group identifiers first.

Smart categorization and reconciliation: runs on-device on your expense data only. No expense content is sent to third parties for this feature.

You can turn off cloud AI features in the app's settings. Core splitting always works fully offline.

Third parties

Authentication and optional cloud sync may use managed services (e.g., Firebase Auth, Supabase, or equivalent). These providers process data on our behalf under data-processing agreements.

Cloud AI: when the language-model fallback is used, the request goes to a commercial LLM provider (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, or equivalent) under a zero-retention or short-retention policy. We do not use provider default retention for user content.

Payment processing: Split Circle is free. We do not process payments inside the app.

Crash reporting may use a third-party SDK with crash data only — no expense content is sent.

Children

Split Circle is not directed to children under 13. If we learn a child under 13 has created an account, we'll delete it.

Data retention

Local data stays on your device until you delete the app or clear its data.

If you use cloud sync, your synced expense data is retained until you delete your account. Account deletion removes it within 30 days.

Your rights

Export: you can export your expense data at any time from the app's settings.

Delete: you can delete individual expenses, groups, or your entire account from within the app. Account deletion is self-service.

Access & correction: contact us if you need a copy of data we hold about you or if something needs correcting.

For users in the EU/UK, you have rights under the GDPR / UK GDPR including access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection. For users in California, you have rights under the CCPA.

International transfers

Our service providers may process data in the US, EU, or other regions. Where required, we use Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent safeguards.

Security

Cloud-synced expense data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. No system is 100% secure, so if you suspect a breach please contact us immediately.

Changes

We'll update the date at the top when we change this policy. For material changes affecting your data, we'll notify users inside the app before the change takes effect.
